The weekend saw Manchester United lose their third game in a row. Unsurprisingly, Man’ United manager, Jose Mourinho criticised some of the decisions made by the match officials. However he did also say that some of his players where not coping with defeat well. These are top flight sportsmen and yet their manager says they are not coping with defeat and it’s effecting their performance. We are accustomed to seeing top sports men and women putting this sort of thing behind them and not dwelling on it. It’s all about attitude. Most top sports personalities don’t think about recent victories and don’t dwell on passed defeats. They analyse, see what they can learn and then move on. If what Jose Mourinho says about his players is true it is a good indication that if dwelling on the negative can have a detrimental effect on top sports people then the rest of us surely can be affected in this way. It doesn’t have to be sport related. This same attitude is found in top business people and show business performers. Indeed any profession where someone is trying to achieve great things or even just make that next step up you’ll find this attitude. We’ve all had a bad day at work. How much do you dwell on such a day or do you just face the next day, as what it is, a different day? Have you given presentations that have gone badly now leading you to fear having to make another presentation?
